Sarah Newell, a lifelong Nebraska resident, has dedicated her career to upholding the Constitution and the idea that everyone deserves a fair trial. A graduate of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, she began her legal career clerking for the Nebraska Supreme Court before serving nearly a decade with the Lancaster County Public Defender’s Office. She later worked for the Nebraska Commission on Public Advocacy and led a team of attorneys as the Criminal Section Head for Berry Law. Today, she serves on major felony cases in the Lancaster County Public Defender’s Office while continuing her leadership in multiple professional organizations within Nebraska’s legal community.

The high turnover rate in the office requires constant training of new staff, stretches existing staff thin, and slows the process. When elected, Sarah will reorganize the office, make better use of support staff to help for non-legal tasks, incorporate a team-based approach to litigation used by large law firms, and work with staff to reduce turnover and provide better representation for our county.
Sarah will work with elected officials to implement smart justice reforms which reduce recidivism, prevent crime, and save taxpayers money. Sarah is proud to be endorsed by 4 out of 5 of the Lancaster county commissioners, because they know she has the knowledge and ability to make these reforms a reality.
Technology has drastically increased the potential of the Public Defender’s Office, but we have failed to keep up. Sarah will incorporate the tools being used by large firms to streamline office activity and boost efficiency.
